Urgent Care

Sick & Urgent Visits in St. George, Utah

When your dog or cat suddenly isn’t acting right, waiting days for a routine appointment isn’t an option. Agave Animal Hospital offers same-day sick and urgent visits for dogs and cats whenever we have room in the schedule, so a worrying symptom can be seen, diagnosed, and treated promptly — close to home in St. George.

When to request an urgent visit

Some problems can’t wait for a regular wellness appointment. Reach out the same day if your pet shows any of these signs:

  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, or refusing food and water
  • Sudden limping, a possible sprain, or trouble standing
  • Cuts, bite wounds, broken nails, or bleeding
  • Squinting, pawing at the eye, or a swollen, red eye
  • Ear pain, head shaking, or a hot spot that appeared overnight
  • Straining to urinate or signs of pain when going to the bathroom
  • Coughing, labored breathing, or unusual lethargy
  • Allergic reactions, swelling, or hives after a sting or new food

Southern Utah’s specific risks

Our desert climate creates problems we see often here. Foxtails and cheatgrass awns can lodge in paws, ears, noses, and eyes during spring and summer hikes. Heat builds fast on the red rock, and heat stress or burned paw pads can turn serious quickly. Active, outdoor dogs also pick up cuts, cactus spines, and limps on the trail. Knowing these local hazards helps us focus the exam and act fast.

What an urgent visit may include

Because your symptoms guide the plan, care is tailored to the problem. Depending on what we find, a visit may include a hands-on exam, pain relief, wound care, and same-day in-house lab work or digital X-rays to reach answers quickly. If your pet needs a procedure, we can discuss surgery options and next steps with you directly.

Urgent visits vs. emergencies

Urgent visits are for pressing-but-stable problems during our open hours, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM. For true emergencies — especially after hours — we’ll point you to the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital for the St. George area. When the crisis passes, routine wellness care helps prevent the next one.

If something feels off with your pet, don’t wait. Request an urgent appointment through our contact page and our team will help you get seen as soon as possible.

Frequently asked questions

Do you take walk-ins for sick pets?

We recommend requesting a same-day appointment through our contact page rather than walking in, so our team can prepare for your pet and reduce your wait. We do our best to fit urgent cases into the schedule whenever we have room during open hours.

What if my pet has an emergency after you're closed?

We're open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM, and closed weekends. For true emergencies outside our hours, please go to the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital. We're happy to provide guidance and the closest emergency referral options for the St. George area.

How is an urgent visit different from a wellness exam?

A wellness exam is a scheduled checkup to keep a healthy pet healthy. An urgent visit addresses a new or worsening problem — like vomiting, limping, or a wound — that needs prompt attention but isn't a life-threatening emergency.
